Technical Fibers and Fabrics

As befits a company with extensive historical connections to the fibers industry, Ticona offers a variety of polymers that are excellent candidates for fiber spinning and nonwovens production. These polymers meet the continuously increasing material requirements of the technical textile markets, such as high temperature and chemical resistance, good elasticity combined with strength, and conformity to the approvals for medical applications and food contact.

Ticona’s portfolio of polymers for use in fiber spinning includes Celanex® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), Riteflex® thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPC-ET) and Hostaform/ Celcon® acetal copolymer. These polymers can be spun by various common technologies to manufacture monofilaments, multifilaments, staple fibers and meltblown/ spunbond nonwovens. Successful commercial applications made from these polymers can be found in automotive, industrial, medical, building and clothing textiles.

Monofilaments of Celanex PBT, Fortron PPS and Riteflex TPC-ET have found uses in a variety of applications. Toothbrush and paintbrush bristles made from Celanex PBT monofilament have a long commercial history, as do papermaking machine drier fabrics made from Fortron PPS monofilament. The hot and particularly harsh chemical environment of a papermaking machine presents a difficult challenge, but one readily overcome with Fortron PPS.  

In yarns, Celanex PBT provides good stretch properties and comfortable fit in apparel textiles as a textured spun yarn. Robust seat upholstery can be made from Celanex PBT, as well as Riteflex TPC-ET. Celanex PBT can also be used in the production of spunbond, meltblown and staple fiber nonwovens, as can Fortron PPS. Both these materials permit production of high basis weight nonwovens, which can be used for thermal and acoustic insulation.

 

Celanex PBT 2008 and Fortron PPS 0203HS resins are used to produce meltblown fabrics for gasoline and diesel fuel filter applications. Celanex PBT media are also used in blood filtration. Staple fibers from Fortron PPS are also converted into needle-felt filter media to produce filter bags for flue gas filtration.

 

Copolymerization of Celanex PBT copolyesters enables the manufacture of low melting point polymers for use as melt adhesives for thermal bonding of meltblown, spunbond and staple fiber nonwovens.
