Although there are a few significant exceptions, the group of plastics called “engineering resins” consists for the most part of materials having a substantial level of crystallinity. This important attribute is responsible for many properties that are desirable in engineering applications. Compared with amorphous resins, the semicrystalline engineering resins generally offer superior performance in fatigue, creep, friction and wear, and deliver good mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength.

One of Ticona’s most important product lines includes Celcon® and Hostaform® acetal copolymers. These resins belong to the general class of polyoxymethylenes (POMs), and are notable for their high degree of crystallinity, which gives them high strength, stiffness and hardness, as well as good chemical and environmental resistance and low moisture absorption.
Another leading product is Ticona’s liquid crystal polymer, Vectra® LCP. This high temperature, high strength, high flow material works effectively for molding thin-wall parts at very short cycle times and is typically used in high precision electrical and electronic components for the information technology and communications industries.
For even higher temperature applications, Ticona supplies Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), with continuous use temperatures up to 240°C (464° F). Ticona offers one of the broadest ranges of polyester products (Celanex® PBT, Impet® PET, Vandar® Polyester Alloys and Riteflex® Polyester Elastomer) available from any supplier. With its multiple polymer capability in polyethylene and polybutylene terephthalate and copolymers, as well as polyester blends and alloys, Ticona’s polyester resins have properties ranging from very strong and stiff to very ductile and impact-resistant. Specialty products are also available from Ticona, notably GUR® ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) and Topas® cyclic olefin copolymer (COC). These two olefinic materials have very different uses, with GUR UHMW-PE going into filtration and low-friction applications in industrial, sports and leisure and orthopedic areas, while Topas COC is a superior product used in packaging, diagnostic and optical applications.
Ticona is also a leading source for long-fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFRT) and offer Celstran® LFRT with a range of fibrous reinforcements including glass, stainless steel, carbon and aramid,in many resins, from polyurethane to polyphenylene sulfide.
